On a hot day in 490 BC, a messenger for the Greek army ran from the city of Marathon to the city of Athens. He arrived totally exhausted, delivered his good news, and then died. In the modern world, finishing a marathon is a personal test of endurance. Surviving 42.2 km (26.2 miles) shows strength, pacing and unstoppable determination.
